Baba Ijesha case: Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James granted bail

Lawyer to Nollywood actor Baba Ijesha have confirmed to newsmen that the actor have been granted bail.

Barrister Adeshina Ogunlana, lawyer to the actor says magistrate doing prison decongestion free the actor on Monday evening.

“He has been granted bail about one hour ago. We are working to perfect the bail. He was granted bail on health grounds.

“He has not been released and will be released after his bail conditions have been perfected,” Ogunlana said.

Barr. Ogunlana, a former chair of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branch, had raised an alarm on Baba Ijesha’s deteriorating health in a letter addressed to the Lagos Commissioner of Police seeking the actor’s bail on Friday.

He also revealed that “the actor was traumatised and walks with difficulties in police detention”.

Among the bail conditions listed by the magistrate for Baba Ijesha’s release are two reliable sureties; one of them must be a level 10 officer, a direct blood relation, and N500,000 bail bond in like sum.

The comic actor has been detailed for over three weeks without arraignment due to the ongoing strike by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

A source at SCID told The Guardian that Baba Ijesha was still in their custody.

“Some magistrates came around and granted him bail. We can’t release him until all the stringent bail conditions are met,” the source said.

It is still unclear next steps as regards the case at hand.

Baba Ijesha is under investigation by the Lagos State police command for allegedly raping a 14-year-old-girl in the home of comedienne Adekola Adekanya, popularly called Princess, since April 22.

The arrest had cause a huge outcry on social media as some people have demanded for the release on bail of the actor, while some demand that he should still be locked up.
