Nigerian hip-hop artists that became famous in their 20s

There are abundant talented artists in the Nigerian music industry. Most of these musicians became famous and also attained global recognition within few years in the industry.

In today’s article, we shall give you a list of Nigerian hip-hop artists who became famous and made waves in their 20s.

1. Wizkid

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun is popularly called (Starboy or Wizkid) was born on 16th July 1990. Wizkid is arguably the most decorated Nigerian artist ever (the most decorated African artist internationally).

Starboy is of the most revolutionary Afro-pop artists of the modern era. He rose to stardom at the age of 19 after his lead single titled Holla at Your Boy. He is presently under an American record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment RCA Record label.

Wizkid won the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Music Video as a lead artist on Beyoncé’s Brown Skin Girl. He also won the BET Awards three times, making him the most African artist with the award.

2. Burna Boy

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu popularly called (Burna Boy) was born on 2nd July 1991. He is one of the biggest and also most successful African artists with global recognition.

Burna Boy became famous at the age of 21 after releasing Like to Party, the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E. He is presently under the American Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group internationally.

He won the award for Best World Music Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2022. Burna Boy has also won 2 BET awards (Best International Act) and several other awards.

3. Davido

David Adedeji Adeleke popularly known as (Davido) was born on 19th November 1992. He is one of the most influential artists in Nigeria and also across the Africa continent.

Davido rose to fame when he was 20, after releasing Dami Durothe second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo. He founded the record label Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). He has done several collaborations with foreign artists.

4. Olamide

Olamide Gbenga Adedeji is popularly called (Olamide) was born on 15th March 1989. He is one of the famous Nigerian artists. Olamide rose to fame at the age of 22 after his lead single Omo To Shan in his debut studio album Rapsodi.

He is the boss of the YBNL label record that formed in 2012. His follow-up album was released under his label imprint YBNL Nation. Olamide had many studio albums, collaborative albums, and EP to his profile.

He is the most awarded artist in the Headies award history with 15 awards.

5. Yemi Alade

Yemi Eberechi Alade was born on 13th March 1989. She sings in many languages such as English, Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba, French, Swahili, and Portuguese.

She is considered one of the leading artists in Nigeria, as well as Africa. Yemi Alade became famous at 25 after releasing her single hitJonny.

6. Patoranking

Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie popularly called (Patoranking) was born on 27th May 1991. He rose to stardom at the age of 24 after his hit single Girlie O.

Patoranking was listed among the 30 most influential under 30 youth in Africa in 2020. He signed under the VP Records label. He had 3 albums studio, several hit singles, and many collaborative albums.

7. Asa

Bukola Elemide known as (Asa) was born on 17th September 1982. She became popular at 24 after her first single Eyé Adaba got airplay. Asa is one of the top female artists whose memory will linger forever.

She has won several awards across the globe. She has featured in soundtrack appearances because of the unique genre such as The Place To Be– a soundtrack for Guaranty Trust Bank.

8. Mr Eazi

Oluwatosin Ajibade known as (Mr Eazi) was born on 19th July 1991. Mr Eazi is one of Africa’s notable music stars. He became famous at 22 after his debut mixtape About to Blow

He is the founder of emPawa Africa, a global firm campaign mentoring and funding African artists. Mr Eazi has performed on stages in the UK and the US. 

He is one of only two African artists to play the world’s most prestigious music festival, Coachella 2019. He has won several awards; the Headies awards and Soundcity MVP Awards.

9. Niniola

Niniola Apata known as (Niniola) was born on 15th December 1984. She is one of the talented and respected female artists in the music industry in Nigeria and also across Africa.

She rose to stardom at the age of 27 after her debut single Ibadi. Niniola composed The Gift in the Beyoncé soundtrack album titled The Lion King that got nominated for the 2020 Grammy Award.

She has got many nominations and has won several awards since her debut hit song.

10. Rema

Divine Ikubor popularly known as Rema was born on 1st May, 2000. He became famous at the age of 19 after his hit song Iron Man. This hit single appeared on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist.

He is presently under a subsidiary of Mavin Records, Jonzing World. Rema has won the Headies awards and also Soundcity MVP Awards. He was nominated for the International Act on the 2020 BET Awards.

11. Simi

Simisola Kosoko known as (Simi) was born on 19th April 1988. She gained prominence at 24 after releasing Tiff

Simi is the founder of Studio Brat’s record label. She has released 4 studio albums, and many hit singles include the popular Jamb Questions and Duduke that gone viral in Nigeria and also across Africa.

Teniola Apata popularly known as (Teni) was born on 12th December 1992. She rose to stardom at the age of 24 after the hit single Fargin. Teni released some hit singles like Case that added to her breakthrough in the industry.

Adedamola Adefolahan known as (Fireboy DML) was born on 5th February 1996. He became famous at 22 after his breakthrough single Jealous.

After his debut in 2018, he has produced 2 studio albums, many collaborative albums, and so many hit singles. Fireboy DML won 5 awards at the 2020 Headies award and also has won the Soundcity MVP Awards.

15. Reekado Banks

Ayoleyi Hanniel Solomon popularly called (Reekado Banks )was born on 6th December 1993. He featured in the hit song Dorobucci Produced by Marvin records. But he became famous at 22 after his hit single Katapot.

Reekado Banks is presently on the Marvin records label. He had a single album, several hit singles, and collaborative albums.

His debut studio album Spotlight was at number 10 on the Billboard World Albums chart. He has won the Headies award.
